City Councilor Dan Lewis has formally requested that the Accountability and Government Oversight Committee of the City of Albuquerque convene without delay to review and release several investigative reports completed by the Office of Inspector General (OIG). In a letter addressed to Committee Chair Victor Griego, Lewis highlighted concerns about outstanding reports related to allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse within City Hall that have remained unpublished for months.
Lewis cited provisions in the Accountability in Government Oversight Ordinance, which allow the committee to defer releasing a report for only one meeting. He stated that “The Inspector General was required to release these reports no later than 15 business days after the last meeting of the committee, which was held on July 30, 2025.” According to Lewis, more than two weeks have passed since the August 20 deadline mandated by ordinance.
The letter noted that at least six OIG reports have not been reviewed or released, with some having been completed nearly a year ago. Former Inspector General Melissa R. Santistevan commented earlier this year that these reports “deal with fraud, waste, or abuse that impact our City.”
Additionally, Lewis referenced an April 2 letter from the Association of Inspectors General (AIG), which raised concerns about nine completed but withheld reports. The AIG urged immediate action from the committee due to its failure to meet promptly and fulfill oversight duties.
Lewis called on the committee to schedule a meeting by October 1, 2025, review all pending OIG reports—including those reviewed by an outside firm—and establish procedures for timely future meetings. He wrote: “Releasing these reports are fundamental for public trust and good governance. Albuquerque residents deserve timely access to the findings of their Inspector General, and it is the AGO Committee’s statutory responsibility to ensure that happens.”
