The Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) Department has announced the start of a weekly 12-Step Meeting at the Trauma Recovery Center (TRC), which opened earlier this year and is described as the first facility of its kind in New Mexico. The meetings will take place every Friday at 7:00 PM at the TRC, located at 5006 Gibson Blvd SE, Albuquerque.

The sessions are led by a designated chairperson and are intended to provide support for individuals seeking help with substance use. This initiative is part of ACS’s broader effort to offer trauma-informed care and address community needs related to behavioral health and addiction.

Mayor Tim Keller commented on the new program, stating, “We’re building a public safety system that cares for the whole person. By creating spaces like this where people can find support without judgment, we’re breaking cycles of trauma and giving people a real chance to heal.”

The Trauma Recovery Center offers services including therapy, case management, peer support, and educational workshops for those affected by violence, addiction, or systemic inequities. ACS Director Jodie Esquibel said, “Recovery is not a solo journey. By hosting 12-Step Meetings, we’re continuing to build a network of healing where trust, support, and lived experience come together to make real change.”

Attendance at the Friday evening meetings is open to all community members; no appointment is necessary. Additional information about the Trauma Recovery Center can be found on its website: www.cabq.gov/vip.

ACS serves as the City of Albuquerque’s third branch of public safety. Its responders handle calls related to behavioral health and substance use issues that do not involve criminal or medical emergencies.
