The Albuquerque City Council has approved a resolution to allocate at least $2 million in emergency funding for the restoration of turf grass in city parks. The measure, R-25-183, was sponsored by City Councilor Dan Lewis of District 5 and received approval on December 1, 2025.
This action comes after reports of widespread deterioration in green spaces throughout Albuquerque. Many parks have seen large areas of dead grass and an increase in weeds such as silverleaf nightshade, spurge, and puncture vines. The council’s decision is intended to address a backlog of maintenance issues affecting these public areas.
Councilor Lewis commented on the importance of this initiative: “Our parks are vital community spaces, and their ongoing decline is unacceptable,” he said. “This resolution provides a dedicated and transparent funding source to urgently address the deteriorating conditions. The administration failed to protect Albuquerque’s green spaces, protect taxpayers, and protect our neighborhoods. It’s time we restore our parks for the families, children, and seniors who depend on them before more costly and disruptive total replacements become necessary, ensuring our residents can continue to enjoy high-quality green spaces.”
Funding for this project will come from the Fiscal Year 2025 fund balance. The money will be used for emergency renovation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts focused specifically on existing park grass and turf areas.
