The Albuquerque City Council has announced new leadership for its 27th term following elections held at the first meeting of the year. Klarissa J. Peña, representing District 3, was elected as City Council President. Dan Champine from District 8 will serve as Vice President, and Renée Grout of District 9 was chosen as Chair of the Committee of the Whole Budget.

“I am deeply honored by the trust my colleagues have placed in me to lead the 27th City Council. As we begin this new year, my focus remains on fostering collaboration across all districts to address our city’s most pressing challenges. Together, we will work toward a safer, more equitable, and prosperous Albuquerque for every resident,” said Peña.

Champine expressed his commitment to supporting council operations: “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as Vice President. I look forward to supporting President Peña and working closely with my fellow Councilors to ensure our legislative process is transparent, efficient, and responsive to the needs of our community. We have a busy year ahead, and I am ready to get to work.”

Grout emphasized her goals regarding fiscal responsibility: “The City’s budget is a reflection of our priorities, and I am honored to lead the Committee of the Whole as we navigate the upcoming fiscal year. My goal is to ensure that every taxpayer dollar is used responsibly and effectively to improve our infrastructure, public safety, and quality of life.”

Standing committee assignments for all council members will be selected by the Council President and are scheduled for formal approval at the next meeting on January 21.
