The ABQ BioPark is preparing to renovate its gorilla habitat, a project funded by the ⅛-cent Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) approved by Albuquerque voters. The new design will use the former orangutan space and create two large areas for gorillas, with construction expected to begin in 2026 and last about two years. The project has a budget of $22 million.
ABQ BioPark Director Brandon Gibson said, “The new habitats will have more vertical structures for climbing as well as water features, special enrichment zones, and expansive views for the apes. They will offer both warming and cooling areas outdoors as well as modernized indoor habitats to ensure the gorillas’ comfort year-round.”
The planned renovations aim to give visitors a chance to see gorillas in an environment that supports their social behaviors and welfare. This effort follows recent recognition from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), which gave the ABQ BioPark Zoo an Exhibit Award for its Asia habitat expansion completed in 2023. That area provided new homes for tigers, snow leopards, Steller’s sea eagles, orangutans, and siamangs.
According to the 2025 GRT Annual Report, several other projects are underway at the BioPark. Construction on the second phase of the Australia Expansion is set to start later this year, featuring animals such as kangaroos, wombats, and Tasmanian devils. Plans are also moving forward for updates to the Butterfly Pavilion, a new Science, Health and Aquatic Research Center (SHARC), and improvements to the Children’s Fantasy Garden.
Mayor Tim Keller commented on these developments: “The BioPark is growing in visible and meaningful ways, from immersive habitats to reimagined spaces. These upgrades ensure that our BioPark will continue to be a leader in animal welfare, conservation, and education.”
In 2024 alone, more than $26 million from GRT supported projects like phase one of Australia Expansion, Heritage Farm expansion, and Festival Green Stage. Since approval of the tax in 2016 by voters—intended specifically for improvements at ABQ BioPark—over $104 million has been invested so far. The funding cycle runs through 2031.
